Your Neighborhood Area Agency on Aging: Getting You Where You Need to Go
Each year, 600,000 older adults stop driving. But transportation is fundamental to maintaining independence, accessing healthcare, and staying connected to your community.
Transportation barriers can lead to missed medical appointments, social isolation, and an inability to go grocery shopping or pick up prescriptions. A recent estimate suggests 2.3 million older adults in the United States have transportation-related barriers to social activities, visiting with family or friends, and attending religious services.
That’s why many Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) across Pennsylvania provide or coordinate transportation services designed specifically for older adults, ensuring age or mobility challenges don’t prevent you from living fully and independently.
More Than Just a Ride
For many older adults, driving is no longer a safe or viable option. Family members may not always be available to provide rides, and public transportation may be inaccessible or confusing.
Many AAAs across Pennsylvania provide or coordinate affordable or free transportation programs that help older adults safely get where they need to go. These services ensure older adults can attend doctor’s appointments, go to the pharmacy, shop for groceries, and participate in social activities—all essential components of aging independently at home.
Additionally, the drivers and staff who provide these transportation services often develop meaningful relationships with the older adults they serve, offering companionship and a sense of security during outings.
What Transportation Services Offer
Transportation programs through AAAs typically provide:
- Medical Transportation: Rides to and from doctor’s appointments, medical treatments, dialysis, physical therapy, and other healthcare services ensure older adults can maintain their health and manage chronic conditions.
- Essential Errands: Transportation to pharmacies, grocery stores, banks, and other locations necessary for daily living help older adults maintain their independence and self-sufficiency.
- Flexible Scheduling: Many programs offer advance reservation systems and will work with older adults to accommodate their specific needs and appointment times.
- Trained Drivers: Drivers are often trained to assist older adults with mobility challenges, including helping passengers in and out of vehicles and providing door-to-door or door-through-door service when needed.
Many AAAs offer these services on a sliding fee scale or accept voluntary contributions, ensuring cost is not a barrier to staying connected and maintaining independence.
