July 18, 2025   |   Caregiving

This article is part of an ongoing series for caregivers of older adults in Pennsylvania, designed to help you access resources, support services, and community connections to enhance your caregiving experience.

As a caregiver for an older adult in Pennsylvania, you are not alone. The Pennsylvania Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) network is here to support you.

Aging in Place Begins at Home

Being the caregiver of an older adult aging at home is about more than just safeguarding their physical safety. It’s also about helping them to remain independent, maintain their relationships, and feel secure within a familiar environment. From making simple safety updates to encouraging meaningful engagement with family, friends, and the wider community, every effort helps older adults as they age in place.

Simple Modifications That Make a Big Difference

As mobility, vision, and balance change with age, everyday spaces can present new challenges and safety concerns. One of the most impactful steps you can take as a caregiver of an older adult is ensuring that their home is safe, accessible, and adapted to their needs.

You don’t need a complete renovation to improve home safety. These small, cost-effective changes can create a more secure environment for older adults to age in place:

  • Clear Walkways: Remove clutter, area rugs, and furniture that obstruct frequently used walking paths.
  • Install Grab Bars: Place grab bars in bathrooms near toilets and inside showers or tubs.
  • Improve Lighting: Ensure all rooms, hallways, and stairwells are well-lit. Consider night lights for bathrooms and bedrooms.
  • Use Non-Slip Mats: Add these in bathtubs, showers, and kitchen floors to reduce fall risks.

Consider a Home Safety Assessment

Empower Independence

A well-adapted home environment promotes independence and helps older adults remain where they feel most comfortable, in their home. These changes protect older adults and help reduce stress and risk in your caregiving role.
